In July 2020, the New York Times reported that the Pentagon's UAP unit had been conducting classified briefings for over a decade — and that a government contractor had briefed the Department of Defense on retrievals of "off-world vehicles not made of this earth." Astrophysicist Eric W. Davis, who worked as a Pentagon subcontractor, gave classified briefings to the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee in October 2019. Former Senator Harry Reid confirmed on record that the government and private sector had recovered materials from unidentified objects. Meanwhile, investigative reporter George Knapp documented that the Defense Intelligence Agency's AAWSAP program — which investigated UAP and related phenomena at a classified site — was defunded after senior officials concluded the phenomena were entity-based rather than extraterrestrial. The program's funding was pulled by officials who reached a conclusion that contradicted the mainstream hypothesis.
