The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is the working title of the second of two upcoming The Lord of the Rings films. The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past (working title) will be written by Philippa Boyens, Stephen Colbert, and Peter McGee and produced by WingNut Films in association with Spartina Industries.

Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo - Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.

Colbert, a lifelong Tolkien devotee, joins forces with the Oscar‑winning architects of the original trilogies—Sir Peter Jackson, Dame Fran Walsh, and Boyens—to bring fans back to the world that shaped a generation with The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past (working title).

Jackson, Walsh, Boyens, and Zane Weiner are currently in pre‑production on the first of the two films, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (working title). The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (working title) is directed by and stars Andy Serkis.
