Malcolm Todd - Chest Pain (I Love) | Vevo DSCVR

It’s slightly ironic that Malcolm Todd’s new self-titled album drops at the same time that high school seniors are sweating college admissions. “When it was time for me to go to college, I found I’d rather play music,” the 21-year-old told us on the DSCVR set, a sly grin creeping onto his face. We at Vevo aren’t in the business of giving life advice, but we do applaud brave decisions; Malcolm’s bet has certainly paid off. In May, he’ll embark on the Wholesome Rockstar tour. Over the course of two dozen shows, fans across North American will hear favorites from both the new record and last year’s ‘Sweet Boy’ project. Filled with lo-fi, midtempo jams primarily orchestrated around lean electric guitar progressions, the latter was a massive streaming success in 2024. “Roommates,” “Sweet Boy,” “4Me 4Me,” and “Art House” boast eight-digit tallies on Spotify. Sonically, Todd’s carefree funkiness sails in the same waters as Steve Lacy and Still Woozy. Seemingly the same pedal-chain is at work in the singles that arrived prior to ‘Malcolm Todd,’ which is being tabbed as a proper debut album. “Bleed” with indie idol Omar Apollo situates more groove into the jangly atmosphere. By TikTok standards, the standout track is “Chest Pain (I Love).” Hoards of users are soundtracking their hobbies to the affable singer’s repetitive croon, “I loooooooove, I looooooove.” For Malcolm, however, it’s not about the numbers. “Whether it’s five people or five million people, I feel really lucky to have people caring about what I’m saying,” he said. Now that’s some serious wisdom.
