House of the Dragon - Episode 9: TEASER TRAILER (4K) | Game of Thrones Prequel (HBO)

It seems that House of the Dragon Episode 9 is when the it will finally hit the fan for House Targaryen. After a mostly heartwarming dinner where Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) made peace, Viserys (Paddy Considine) died, leaving his wife with a garbled version of Aegon the Conqueror’s prophecy of the “Prince Who Was Promised.” Alicent said she understood, but clearly she was misinterpreting the dying man’s words as permission — if not an order — to put her dirtbag son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) on the Iron Throne. Based on how quickly Aegon and brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) turned on Rhaenyra’s sons, we’re guessing they’re eager for a war. But what does HBO’s official House of the Dragon Episode 9 preview tease??

The House of the Dragon Episode 9 preview confirms that Viserys Targaryen is in fact dead and Alicent believes his dying wish was to put Aegon on the Iron Throne. Rumor has it the title of the upcoming episode is called “The Green Council” and this teaser suggests that is indeed the case. Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) and Alicent are moving to put their boy on the throne…but what of Rhaenyra?

The House of the Dragon Episode 9 preview opens on a somber wide shot of the empty throne room. Alicent sits at the head of the Small Council table, flanked by Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) and her father, who says, “The King is dead.” Someone sharpens their sword.

A teary-eyed Alicent tells someone, “He told me he wished Aegon to be king.” Mobs rush together in Flea Bottom and then we see scattered kneeling to Ser Otto as he stands before the Iron Throne. In the Small Council room, Ser Otto says, “The door remains shut until we finish our business,” as Aemond glowers at someone in the throne room. Ser Otto tells someone that “No one can know who you are or what you seek.” This figure, who appears to be a Whitecloak, stalks through the Red Keep.

Elsewhere, Rhaenys (Eve Best) is locked in her chambers and servants are led to the dungeons. A troubled Alicent asks, “What of Rhanyra?” More shots of mobs in King’s Landing. Larys (Matthew Needham) says, “I’ve found out something you should know.” There is a shot of a toddler with white blonde Targaryen hair sitting in what appears to be a cell. There’s some kind of boxing match and then a shot of Aemond in a hood in the city during daylight hours.

Ser Criston Cole draws his sword on someone and a separate fight breaks out in the streets. In the Small Council, Lord Beesbury (Bill Paterson) shouts, “This is seizure! This is treason at the very least!” Knights draw their swords to create a tunnel. Twins Ser Arryk and Ser Erryk walk in hoods somewhere, Targaryen heralds blow trumpets, and someone — perhaps one of the twins — grabs Aegon, who is running away from something. Crowds head up a great staircase and Otto nods in satisfaction.

Finally, a crude version of Viserys’s crown is laid on a pillow while Rhaenys whispers to someone, “Have you never pictured yourself on the Iron Throne?”
