Aaron Alexander & Andrew Gordon react to Episode 5 of Heated Rivalry, one of the most emotionally significant chapters of the Crave / HBO sports romance series adapted from Rachel Reid’s novel. This episode marks a turning point where secrecy gives way to honesty, and long-suppressed feelings finally surface. Episode 5 opens with Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams – Bel-Air, Holly Hobbie) confronting his truth head-on, as he comes out as gay for the first time during a candid dinner with actress Rose Landry, ending their romantic relationship but preserving a meaningful friendship. The story then reunites Shane with longtime rival and lover Ilya Rosanov (Connor Storrie – Slasher, The Porter) at the 2017 All-Star Game, where they play on the same team for the first time. Their reunion forces both men to confront the emotional depth of their connection—especially when Shane suggests what they share has grown beyond casual sex, prompting Ilya to break down over his fear that his family and life in Russia would never accept them. Later, the death of Ilya’s father, sends him back to Moscow to confront unresolved family trauma and sever ties with his brother. In one of the season’s most talked-about moments, Ilya calls Shane in his grief and—encouraged to speak freely in Russian—finally confesses his love. After Shane is injured during a Boston vs. Montreal game, Ilya visits him in the hospital, where a medicated Shane impulsively invites Ilya to spend the summer at his family’s cottage, hinting at a future neither has fully allowed themselves to imagine. Running parallel is a landmark league moment: Scott Hunter (François Arnaud – Midnight, Texas, Blindspot) wins the MLH Cup and publicly kisses Kip (Robbie G.K. – Departure, Murdoch Mysteries) on the ice, becoming the first openly gay MLH player.
