It’s no secret that Wale is one of rap’s most underrated stars. The prolific MC from DC has collaborated with all your favorite artists from the ‘00s and ‘10s. His debut record Attention Deficit foretold the genre-bending evolution rap would undergo over the next decade. Over that span, his albums topped the Billboard 200 charts twice, first in 2013 with The Gifted and then again two years later with The Album About Nothing. All the while, both Wale and the media bolstered his reputation as an outspoken - sometimes less than ‘likeable,’ in his words - artist who relished in fighting criticism and negativity. His new record Wow… That’s Crazy addresses those perceptions. “It’s about destroying and rebuilding and letting go of the stigma of ‘crazy’ or other misconceptions,” he told Washington Post recently. “I’ve been trying to figure out how to be happy for years. I feel like I’m getting closer to it. With the single “On Chill,” featuring Jeremih, giving Wale his third highest Hot 100 ranking of his career, there’s a lot for the die hard DC sports fan to be happy about (Not to mention, a recent World Series victory). In the Ctrl studio he gifted us a rendition of “BGM,”another heater from Wow… and perhaps that’s all there is to say. Wow.
