Ok so Wickerman is often labelled as the Citizen Kane Of Horror.

However, the movie goes beyond the confines of one specific genre. Shot almost completely in daylight it also brings in lots of elements from comedies and musicals. Even the things we typically tend to class as a horror…dont really appear in this movie. Nothing scary even happens right until the end and theres no over the top shocks to jolt you in your seat.

However, there’s a feeling of unease throughout.

Most of the horrors going on in the background, behind the camera. You dont know anything the first time watching it. It’s only when you see that final scene that your mind fills in the blanks. In the end we learn we’ve been watching a cult and it recontextualises everything that came before. All those smiling, sweet and slightly sickly faces, they all take on another meaning. Because of that it’s a movie that stuck with me for a long long time and I think it more than deserves its reputation. It’s gone on to influence every cult film that followed and you can see it in Midsommar, the Third Day and much much more.
