The new Helluva Boss Short is a reference to the horror movie "The Thing"

Did you notice this in Helluva Boss?

During the mission antarctica short at the start we find out that a bunch of scientists were killed by a man eating beast. The case file also specifically mentions it being near mcmurdo station.

McMurdo Station is a real-life U.S. Antarctic research center. This is also a pretty clear reference to the cult classic 1982 horror sci fi film called the thing.

During the thing, a group of scientists are hunted by a man eating alien monster than can take the shape of it’s victims. At one point in the film, the scientists try to contact mcmurdo station for assistance over the radio.

So as you can see the short is a cool nod to the horror film. It also raises the question of if the penguins are actually alien monsters. This would explain their bloodlust, and why they operated as a huge hivemind. Perhaps we’ll see them return as foes in a future episode.
