John Humphrey & Andrew Gordon react to and review The Color Purple (1985), the powerful historical drama directed by Steven Spielberg (Schindler’s List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Saving Private Ryan) and based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel by Alice Walker. Set in the early 20th-century American South, the film tells a deeply emotional story of survival, resilience, and sisterhood as it follows Celie’s journey toward self-worth and independence. Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost, Sister Act) delivers a breakthrough performance as Celie Harris, a young Black woman enduring years of abuse and separation from her sister while searching for hope and identity.
