John Humphrey and Jon Maturan react to Next Friday (2000), the cult-favorite comedy sequel to Friday that takes the chaos out of South Central and drops Craig into the suburbs. Written and produced by Ice Cube (Boyz n the Hood, Barbershop) and directed by Steve Carr (Dr. Dolittle 2, Ride Along), the film expands the Friday universe with bigger set pieces, wilder characters, and even more over-the-top neighborhood drama. After getting Smokey fired and drawing the attention of Debo’s vengeful relatives, Craig Jones (Ice Cube) is sent to live with his eccentric Uncle Elroy (Don “D.C.” Curry – Norbit, The Boondocks) and over-the-top Cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps – The Hangover, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) in the suburbs. But peace doesn’t last long. Craig and Day-Day quickly find themselves in a feud with their flashy, criminal next-door neighbors — the Joker brothers — and their intimidating enforcer Pinky (Clifton Powell – Ray, Rush Hour). The film is packed with memorable comedic moments, including Day-Day’s overconfident tough-guy persona, Uncle Elroy’s lottery-ticket hustle, the chaotic record store scenes, and the infamous run-ins with Baby Joker and the Joker family. Mike Epps’ breakout performance as Day-Day became one of the defining elements of the sequel, helping shape the tone for the franchise moving forward.
