How Many Mewtwo REALLY Exist in the Pokémon World?

Most Pokémon are species, common as animals, like what we have in our own world, but some are canonically supposed to be quite exclusive, with Mewtwo as prime example. According to his own backstory, only one Mewtwo should exist, created in the Pokémon Mansion by Team Rocket. And yet, Mewtwo has reappeared in countless games, which begs the question... how many Mewtwo really exist? And how loyal has Game Freak been to that original backstory throughout the entire history of the Pokémon series?
