Gaming is Not about Video Games Anymore

Video gaming is hardly about the games anymore. Discussions in the gaming space have very little to do with gameplay and are instead, usually, focused on the price of the games, the budget to make the games, the politics injected into said games, and the visuals. This is a far cry from what internet gaming commentary used to be. Long ago when people talked about what game had the best gameplay, which heroes would win in a fight, and which game was overall the best game. It’s rare to see people praise gameplay now, if gameplay is part of the conversation at all… Usually gameplay is discussed negatively compared to that game’s disproportionate budget.

But why has this happened? Why aren’t gaming discussions fun? Why are conversations around gaming so negative? Is it because of the toxic grifting YouTubers? Or is it because of the shills and their toxic positivity? What has happened in the gaming space that made people so concerned with the budgets of video games? Why do people care about what the industry, at large, is doing? We didn’t care in the past. In the PlayStation 2 days we weren’t ingrained in the nitty-gritty of the video game business; all we cared about was playing good games. One after the next.
