Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon return to Westeros with their reaction & review of Game of Thrones – Season 5, Episodes 1 & 2: “The Wars to Come” and “The House of Black and White.” With Tywin Lannister laid to rest, the power vacuum in King’s Landing begins to ripple across the Seven Kingdoms — and beyond.

“The Wars to Come” opens with a chilling flashback to young Cersei Lannister (portrayed in the present by Lena Headey, 300, Dredd) receiving a prophecy that foreshadows her downfall. In the present timeline, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage, The Station Agent, Avengers: Infinity War) travels with Varys (Conleth Hill) toward Meereen, where Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke, Solo, Me Before You) struggles to rule as the Sons of the Harpy begin their insurgency. At the Wall, Jon Snow (Kit Harington, Eternals) refuses Stannis Baratheon’s offer of legitimacy, culminating in Mance Rayder’s fiery execution — mercifully ended by Jon’s arrow. Meanwhile, Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) moves Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner, X-Men: Apocalypse) closer to the heart of danger. In “The House of Black and White,” Arya Stark (Maisie Williams, The New Mutants) arrives in Braavos and enters the mysterious House of Black and White under the guidance of Jaqen H’ghar. Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) recruits Bronn (Jerome Flynn) for a secret mission to Dorne, while Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) continues her vow to protect Sansa from the shadows. At Castle Black, Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) nominates Jon for Lord Commander, leading to a tense vote that changes the balance of power at the Wall. In Meereen, Daenerys’ decision to execute a former slave sparks unrest — and Drogon’s sudden return reminds everyone that dragons cannot be controlled.
