John Humphrey & Jon Maturan react to and review the 1995 hood comedy classic Friday, directed by F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job, Straight Outta Compton) and written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. A defining ‘90s comedy, Friday follows two friends trying to survive one very long day in South Central Los Angeles after getting fired and realizing they owe the neighborhood drug dealer money by 10 p.m. Ice Cube (Boyz n the Hood, Barbershop) stars as Craig Jones, an unemployed everyman who spends the day posted up on his porch with his fast-talking best friend Smokey, played by Chris Tucker (Rush Hour trilogy, The Fifth Element) in a breakout comedic performance. The film delivers endlessly quotable moments — from “Bye, Felisha!” to Smokey’s frantic chain-smoking paranoia and the escalating showdown with neighborhood bully Deebo (played by Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr., The Dark Knight, The Fifth Element). The supporting cast is stacked with memorable characters, including Nia Long (Love Jones, The Best Man) as Debbie, Craig’s love interest; John Witherspoon (The Wayans Bros., Boomerang) as Craig’s hilarious, life-lesson-dropping father Willie Jones; and Anna Maria Horsford (Amen, The Bold and the Beautiful) as his no-nonsense mother. Blending slice-of-life humor, sharp social commentary, and unforgettable one-liners, Friday became a cult classic and launched a beloved comedy franchise.
