Fable Looks Nothing Like "Fable"

Every single year, video game graphics get better. There are more polygons. Better lighting. Higher resolution textures. Ray tracing. And every year, games start looking more and more... the same. This homogenized, glossy, waxy sameness has infected almost every major AAA release. We've gotten so good at making things look realistic that we've forgotten how to make things look like themselves. Or unique. Or stylistic. The new Fable trailer has dropped, revealing a very hyperrealistic version of a generic fantasy world. Fable 2026 doesn't look like Fable. It looks like everything else. These towns look like a theme park. The game looks like a Renaissance fair. It looks like the employees at Medieval Times got a $300 million budget. It looks like really expensive LARPing. Now none of this is necessarily a bad thing. I think this is the most visually impressive trailer I’ve ever seen. And that’s not hyperbole. This looks like a realistic town with extremely realistic faces on the NPCs. But is that what Fable is known for? Is it known for hyperrealism? I don’t think so. And as I zoomed out to look at other games, I finally discovered the words to discuss this as a concept that’s been on my mind for years. The Closer We Get to Realism, the Further We Get from Art. The more photorealistic video games become, the less artistic identity they have. We're moving in a direction where perfect realism equals zero style.
