Carol Sturka continues to struggle with loneliness and curiosity while engaging more with the hive-minded Others, especially Zosia, who has returned to spend time with her. Carol starts to learn how the Others live together and even sees a recreated diner from her past, a gesture meant to comfort her, but ultimately unsettling. During their long conversations, Zosia opens up about their origins and even reveals that the original signal that caused the Joining came from the exoplanet Kepler-22b. Their relationship crescendos in an intimate moment, a kiss and shared night, that leaves Carol both comforted and conflicted. Meanwhile, Manousos, another immune human, wakes up in a Panamanian hospital and insists on leaving immediately and continues his journey north, determined to reunite with Carol to help save humanity.
